Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve liest at the junction of the
Aravalis and the Vindhayas, standing out conspicuously in
the vast arid and dry tract of eastern Rajasthan, barely
14 kilometers from Sawai Madhopur.
It
spreads over a highly undulating topography varying from
the gentle to steep slopes, from flat topped hills of the
Vindhyas to the conical hillocks and the sharp ridges of
the Aravalis, from wide and flat valleys to narrow rocky
gorges. An important geological feature the 'Great
Boundary Fault' where the Vindhaya plateaus meet the
Aravali hill ranges, meanders through the reserve. The
National Park is bound by the rivers Chambal in the south
and the Banas in the north.
Pure
stands of the 'flame of the forest' interspersed with open
grasslands at the pleatues, six large lakes - Gilai sagar,
Lahpur, Mansarovar, Malik Talao, Raj Bagh and Padam Talao
within the National Park. Tiger being at the apex of the
food chain, lord over the kingdom in a subtle way.
Solitary by nature, it operates in the stealth. Therefore
tiger sightings, frequent as they are, are always a matter
of chance. However even evidences of tiger's activities
are very exciting.
The other
cats found in Ranthambhore are Leopard, Caracal, Leopard
cat, Fishing cat and the Jungle cat. Besides the big cats,
the other large predators of Ranthambhore are Sloth beer,
Striped hyena, Jackal, Desert fox, Palm civet, Common
mongoose, Crocodile, Python etc. There are two species of
deer namely the Spotted Deer & Sambhar and the two kinds
of antelopes namely the Indian Gazelle (Chinkara) and the
Bluebull (Nilgai).
Ranthambhore is also very rich in bird life with more than
250 species of birds. Infact , for a keen bird watcher
Ranthambhore and the surrounding area is paradise. Some of
the more interesting resident species of birds are large
comorant, painted spurfowl, sarus crane ,bronze winged
jacana, sandpiper, kingfisher, nightjar, painted
sandgrouse, great horned owl and many more regular winter
migrants which come from their nesting grounds north of
Himalayas to Ranthambhore and surrounding areas.
Besides
tiger, there are many other animals to observe, understand
and enjoy. Graceful spotted deer, huge sambhar, crocodiles
basking around the banks of the lakes, vultures soaring in
the sky, crested serpent eagle scanning the ground from
it's perch or the kaleidoscope of waterfowl at the pools
are all the interest for a visitor with sensitivity.
Ranthambhore is a great experience in totality and our
Tiger Den Resort will enhance your experience by making it
cool & comfortable.
